PIKL FAQ's

 Dedicated to our friend Doc

When?
June 16th till the last boat goes home!
Where?
Birmingham Ferry Campground, Land Between the Lakes, Grand Rivers, Kentucky.  See a MapQuest map
How do I find the campground
From I-24, it is about 12 miles South on Kentucky 453.  See the LBL map.  After you get in LBL, go past Hillman Ferry Campground.  The next campground will be Birmingham Ferry.  Turn to Starboard on Old Ferry Road. Go to the end of the road and you'll find PIKL.
Since Birmingham Ferry has no showers where can I get one?
You can go across the bay to Hillman Ferry Campground.  They charge $2 for a shower.  If you go out into the river, then turn North and go back into the next cove to the right, you can find the Hillman Ferry launch ramp and swimming pool.  There is a nice bathhouse and showers next to the swimming pool.  While near Lighthouse Landing and the Kentucky State Parks, you might want to snag a shower.
I need to charge my batteries and Birmingham Ferry has no electricity.
That is true, but PIKL will have electricity!  We'll have a generator set up for folks to plug into and recharge their stuff.  We'll run it every night so folks can charge all night, if they want.  We will have a 10 amp and 6 amp 12-volt charger for everyone's use.
Do I need reservations for a campsite?
No.  We have reserved and garunteed the entire back section of Birmingham Ferry, including the launch ramp and trailer parking area for our exclusive use.  No one else will be launching or retrieving at the ramp except PIKL participants.  We will have about 10 acres for our exclusive usage.
What do campsites cost?
$8 per night.  I have garunteed $72 per day for our exclusive use of the area.  Each participant should kick in something to help defray the cost.
I've heard about "dry counties" in the South, what does that mean?
There is no alcohol sold in this county for off-site consumption.  There is a resturaunt that seves beer and mixed drinks near I-24.  It is a Southwestern styled joint.  Tell Leslie, the bartender Bad Bob said "Hi"  :)

Kentucky has low taxes on cigarettes and alcohol.    I suggest taking highway 68 from I-24 to Paducah which will lead you to an area with a couple of competing beer/liquor stores with very good prices.  If you are coming from the other direction, your last chance is Clarksville, Tennessee.
Do I need to bring anything?
Bring, or prepare to make a dish for the pot luck supper Saturday night.
Where is the nearest grocery store.
There is a mom/pop grocery store in Grand Rivers.  Turn on the street opposite Lighthouse Landing, go to the stop sign and turn right.  Grand Rivers is tiny and you won't have any trouble finding it.  Ice is available in Grand Rivers, also.
Will we be near any resturaunts?
We will go to Grand Rivers to eat at Patti's or the Iron Pot, or whatever it's name is.  We will be able to walk from Lighthouse Landing to the restaurants.  We will anchor out at Kenlake State Park one night and all the KY resorts have great buffets.
Are there any resorts close by?
Moors resort is directly across the lake from Birmingham Ferry.  Kenlake KY state resort is large with all amenities.  Check out Kentucky Lakes.Com for additional information.
I heard there is a big bass tournament that weekend, will they bother us?
They expect 300 boats for the tournament.  They will eliminate a number of boats each day.  By Saturady most will have gone home.  :)
What if we have an on-water emergency?
TVA mans a 24-hour emergency number that dispatches the appropriate emergency response group.   The people manning the phone are familiar with the lake and will be able to direct people to you on the water and have resources at the nearest ramp, if needed.  Put this phone number in your cell phone:  800-839-0028
